Interpreter of Maladies

The maladies of a young woman and a middle-aged man converge when their paths cross during a family trip to India. Mrs. Das is a woman of most likely less than thirty years of age that is trapped in a marriage. She is bitter and disinterested in her family life, so much so that she cheated on her husband with a visiting friend and had a bastard child. In an attempt to resolve the internal turmoil that she faces daily by continuing to conceal her act of indiscretion that begot a son, she confesses to Mr. Kapasi.

In my opinion...

The story in my opinion makes Mrs. Das the villain, but she is a lot like many women. She is of East Indian descent but is not in touch with her heritage, and is very Americanized. The story vilifies her in a sense that it puts her in a light that makes the reader not want to identify with her as a woman. It highlights that she was unfaithful to her husband, that she has lied to her husband, son, and other family for years about her son's real father, and during their trip she is selfish, uninvolved, and disconnected not only from her husband but her children. This short story entices the reader to view Mrs. Das as a bad wife and mother, instead of her state as a woman. She is alienated by her husband, unhappy with her life, disgusted with her situation, and dealing with the daily realization that she has birthed an illegitimate child. Her situation is wearing on her spirit and unless one chooses to see Mrs. Das as a victim of circumstance, one will see her as a villain.

What do you think?

Do you believe that the Das family being so young in age, emotion and experience effects Mr. and Mrs. Das ability to successfully raise emotionally stable children?

What aspect of your life do you feel as though you have no control over, does it necessarily make you a terrible person?

Who do you turn to in order as your interpreter of maladies, as in, who do you think has overall insight into your life that could possibly help you release any insecure and/ or negative feelings about yourself?
